The best medications to use if you suffer migraine headaches are listed in a new study.
Researchers reviewed recent scientific literature and concluded that a number of classes of drugs were effective for treating acute migraine.
These include triptans (sumatriptan, zolmitriptan,rizatriptan, naratriptan and eletriptan), dihydroergotamine (DHE) and many NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that include aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen). Also on the list: butorphanol nasal spray, and the combination medications sumatriptan/naproxen and paracetamol/aspirin/caffeine.
Several other medications are “probably effective” or “possibly effective,” according to the study in the January issue of the journal Headache.
While powerful opioid pain drugs such as butorphanol, codeine/paracetamol and tramadol/paracetamol are likely effective migraine treatments, they are not recommended for regular use, the researchers said.
The study will form the basis of new American Headache Society guidelines for the treatment of migraine.

NAFDAC workers suspend strike #JohesuStrike
THE Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria has suspended the 16-day strike embarked upon by workers of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), giving Federal Government 10 days to address their grievances.
Addressing newsmen at the NAFDAC office in Lagos, on Thursday, Chairman of the Federal Area Council, MHWU, Mr Steven Ibe, called on all staff of NAFDAC to resume work on Monday, December 1.
According to him, the strike was suspended to pave the way for the three-man committee set up by the Federal Government to look into the salary issues to come up with a satisfactory salary structure for the workers.
He, however, noted that the JOHESU strike would continued indefinitely, as, according to him, the Federal Government had remained unyielding at addressing the issues surrounding the union’s strike.

Nigeria to begin clinical trials of #Ebola vaccine
THE Supervising Minister of Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan, Monday disclosed that Nigeria is set to follow internationally-approved protocols to commence clinical trial of Ebola vaccines developed by its researchers and some of the candidate vaccines currently in the global medicine community.
The trial might require testing of the drugs on humans following laid-down international protocols.
Alhassan, who made this revelation at the launch of surveillance and operation vehicles for Ebola virus, other diseases and emergency responses in Abuja Monday, said the clinical trial of the drugs was based on the advice of the Treatment Research Group set up at the heat of the Ebola virus outbreak in Nigeria.
He said government’s efforts to strengthen a number of its reference laboratories spread across the six geographical regions to facilitate diagnosis of diseases.
